EcoTrash is targeting issues related to waste diversion, contamination between garbage and recycling streams, inefficient public-bin collection, and the lack of real-time data on how public waste bins are being used. The goal is to explore whether a smart strap-on sensor device can be attached to existing City garbage and recycling bins to detect usage activity, support better separation of waste and recyclables, reduce unnecessary collection trips, and provide the City with useful data to improve public waste management, cleanliness, and sustainability outcomes.
