Motion To: WHEREAS children are society’s most vulnerable and their safety and security is paramount; and WHEREAS a motorist’s legal requirement to halt behind a stopped school bus is a traffic regulation that helps save the lives of children; and WHEREAS any motorist that overtakes a stopped school bus commits an egregious violation with potentially fatal consequences; and WHEREAS cameras on the stop arms of school buses are an excellent traffic enforcement mechanism for catching motorists that illegally overtake halted school buses; and WHEREAS cameras are in place in other jurisdictions in Canada and the United States; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that City Council urge the Minister of Transportation, Glen Murray, to amend the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) to permit the use of school bus stop arm cameras for the purpose of identifying and convicting motorists that pass stopped school buses without the need for further testing in court.
